For 25 years, MercyCorps has helped to alleviate suffering all over the world by helping people build secure, productive and sound communities. Mercy Corps’ agency programs currently reach seven million people in over 35 countries. Since 1979, Mercy Corps has provided over $1 billion in assistance to people in 81 nations. Mercy Corps is a non-profit organization with headquarters in Portland, Seattle, Cambridge, Washington, D.C. and Edinburgh, Scotland.

Mercy Corps has been an important force in comforting children displaced by Hurricane Katrina. Mercy Corps is working with students, teachers, and child care providers to bring comfort to youth and children displaced and affected by the hurricanes. The current Comfort for Kids program is modeled on a program created to help traumatized New York school children in the aftermath of 9/11.

The Comfort for Kids program is comprised of several components including: Comfort Kits, designed to promote emotional security, comfort, and basic developmental support to infants, toddlers, and preschoolers. These kits were presented in small child-friendly duffel bags and backpacks. School Kits contain notebooks, pens, games, a stuffed animal, markers, and other school supplies for kindergarten to 12th grade students who have been affected by the storm; 15,000 School Kits were assembled and 3000 of these included backpacks. Bright Spaces in a Box are kits containing resources and guidelines for creating safe and nurturing play areas for displaced young children. Each kit is comprised of boxes containing materials and guidelines for creating and operating a play space for young children, from furniture to art supplies and toys. Training and Resource Materials are tailored to natural disasters and displacement, to aid in strengthening the ability of childcare workers and education professionals to support traumatized youth.

We, at school-bags.com applaud and support the good work Mercy Corps does, and we are proud to play a part in helping this important organization bring backpacks to these special children. We offer Mercy Corps our support, and wishes for continued success in their mission to help people in need, here, and all over the world!
