Graham Road Elementary Backpack Distribution Day
Reed Smith is a top international law firm, dedicated to core values of teamwork, professionalism and mutual respect and has a deep commitment to building and maintaining longstanding relationships. Reed Smith is committed to helping the communities in localities where they have offices. For the 6th year, Reed Smith's Falls Church office will provide Graham Road Elementary School with new backpacks and all needed school supplies for the year for all 400 students. This project is a large undertaking and requires the participation of many people and organizations. In addition to internal fundraisers, they count on vendors, clients, friends and the local community to help raise the necessary funds to purchase backpacks and supplies. Reed Smith chose Graham Road because approximately 80% of its students are from homes with annual incomes below the poverty level. The school is also challenged by having a 35% attrition rate, the second highest in Fairfax County. Ethnic- and language-minority students comprise over 75% of the student body, representing 22 countries and 10 languages. Despite these hurdles, Graham Road has a reputation for honoring and celebrating diversity and for promoting student achievement and instructional excellence. In addition to the annual backpack and supply drive, Reed Smith has had active participation in the school's mentoring program for over 8 years. They also purchase student agendas for each student (an expense each school is normally required to incur), have book drives and donate household items and clothing which the school distributes to the families.
